Renewable energies

Primary focus is on biomass, biogas, and small hydroelectric projects not requiring a major dam. Wind farms and certain types of solar energy projects are also considered. Geothermal and municipal waste-to-energy projects are not accepted.

Conventional technology

Innovative uses of conventional technologies are attractive. Pilot projects demonstrating new technologies are generally not considered.

Improves local environment

Projects must meet or exceed local environmental requirements as well as international environmental standards.

Creates local economic and social benefits

Projects that create local employment and in other ways improve the local economy are preferred.

High carbon sequestration

Projects that have the potential to sequester greenhouse gases and qualify as CDM projects are preferred.
